From Open-Cast Mine to Amusement Park
BELANTIS began as a dream of the Regiocast Group, a radio broadcasting group in eastern Germany. Their vision was to create an amusement park that could compete with the larger parks in western Germany. For this ambitious project, a 50-hectare site near Leipzig, close to Lake Zwenkau, was selected.
The beginning of the development phase was challenging. The site had previously been part of a brown coal open-cast mine, and the soil conditions made construction difficult. In addition, rain and unforeseen changes in the construction plans added complexity to the work.
Despite these initial difficulties, BELANTIS opened its gates in April 2003. The park grew steadily and expanded its offerings with breathtaking attractions such as the "Huracan" in 2010 and the family-friendly "Cobra of Amun Ra" in 2015.
With the expansion of the themed areas and the construction of a bridge between the "Realm of Sun Temples" and the "Prairie" in 2017, BELANTIS enabled visitors to make a full tour of the park. In 2018, the Spanish company Parques Reunidos took over the management of the park and expanded the area by an additional 27 hectares.
In April 2025, BELANTIS was acquired by the French amusement park group Compagnie des Alpes, which has since introduced new impulses for further development.
In December 2025, Compagnie des Alpes announced major future steps for BELANTIS – including a completely new themed area scheduled to open in spring 2026. With "Idefix’ Adventure Land," the popular Asterix universe will make its first appearance in Germany, bringing the first Asterix experience world outside France directly to Leipzig.
But this is only the beginning of a new era: by the turn of the year 2030/31, BELANTIS is planned to become fully the Asterix Park Germany. This marks one of the largest transformation projects in the park's history and an exciting new chapter for amusement park fans across Germany.
